El Hotel de los Secretos #12, 2/9/16 Tuesday: Beaten Up and Beat Down and Just Plain Beat!

El Pasado:

Julio finally straggles and struggles, making his way back through the kitchen entrance of the Grand Hotel, drunk, disheveled and disheartened.  I might add disdainful of the lovely Isabela who hears the commotion and races into the kitchen only to be cursed by “her camarero.” He literally curses the day he and his sister ever came upon the Alarcon Family.  They are capable of anything and everything!  The family only knows betrayal and wickedness.  They are capable of twisting the purest and most spotless of souls there is!  Andres has to drag him out of there before the whole hotel is awakened.

El Nuevo:

Julio pushes off Andres and Lupe’s kid and sleeps it off in a corner of the kitchen that night while Isa weeps behind locked doors.  Andres tosses and turns until dawn when he makes it back to the kitchen and carries Julio off to bed.

As the day begins downstairs, poor Lupe tries cheering up his ungrateful son.  As kids often do, he returns the favor with snide remarks that because of Lupe loving his cooking more than his wife (in a few words) the woman left and Smart-Ass Kid never knew his mother.  Lupe gives the kid what for and a much deserved and well-placed whack across the chops.

Upstairs, Isa hides in her locked room as Diego abuses his authority and tries using his skeleton key to enter and spy on her.  He thinks twice about it and leaves.  She races of to her friend, Mati’s, suite and climbs in the bed.  Matilde complains that Isa’s making too much over this nobody of a camarero of hers.  Isa supposedly loses all perspective when it comes to this guy!  Isa denies it.  They’re only friends.  Talk to the hand, says Mati.  This face knows better and it ain’t listenin’.

Alfredo goes looking for Mama with Dona Teresa.

Downstairs Natalia seems to have herself a crush on Andres; Julio tries to make peace with Andres who is still upset at him and who reminds Julio that he still owes him his life savings.  Julio overhears Diego discussing a romantic “make-up” dinner for Isa with Benjamin.  Ben chooses Julio to be the “silent” waiter who will fade into the wall for this dinner.  “What a great honor befalls you tonight, Espinoza!”

In another part of the hotel, the General’s daughter runs into Felipe.  She’s hungry and studying up in her room cuz papi’s all pissed at her.  Felipe blows her off and begins his breakfast bender in the reception area while papi General eats with Dona Teresa and discusses his daughter’s virginity…er…purity.

Belen nags Dona Angela for her own room now that she’s Angie’s assistant.  It comes with the position and it’s the least she deserves, sayz she.  If not, then she’ll talk to Dona Teresa directly.  Crap on a cracker!  That is all it takes for Angie to succumb.

Afterwards, Angie and Andres have a heart to heart where she again asks why he has to chain himself to somebody else’s accident.  Yeah, she overheard him and Belen discussing it and knows the truth.  Don’t waste your breath trying to deny it.  Andres then admits the baby needs a daddy and he, never having known his own, feels the need—or the call, as it were…..

Freddy finds Dona Teresa and together they head to Sofia’s suite and find Mama Elisa trying fruitlessly to feed the simpering Sofi.  Elisa has in mind to send Sofia to see a major OB in Mexico City, she tells Teresa and all when she invites herself to breakfast with them.  Teresa has something--and someone else--in mind.

Isa snubs Julio at breakfast and refuses to have him serve her and the others.  She pointedly asks Andres to serve.

Later I the day, Dona Teresa and Dr. Vicarrio take a walk through the garden mazes and discuss his becoming her resident [de planta=staff] doctor for the hotel in between a bit of adult adulation and possible flirtation.  He accepts her proposition to “protect” her daughter from Elisa’s prying eyes and any humiliating annulment and agrees to bend his principles accordingly.  The first ruling of the day will be to prevent Sofia’s traveling and to have her and the hubby “sleep in separate bedrooms to avoid any risk to the pregnancy.” And with that, he and she are totally on a first name basis.

Detective Ayala returns from somewhere and suggests they’ve got a way to go to solve this murder, despite the fact he tells Dagoberto that he’s a decent local cop.  “—So don’t go strutting around here [andar sacando pecho de Paloma= lit. walking around like a dove’s breast].  Dago asks if he knows whether Julio Olemedo is some possible criminal.  Ayala is going to Veracruz to find out for certain.  Olmedo has that prison tat and Ayala wants to know how he got it.  Could be that he spent time in a certain prison where nationalistic terrorists are held.

Back at the hotel, Belen and Diego are having a chat about Belen’s latest triumph over Angela in wrangling her own private room from the old battleaxe.  He writes her a check and he makes her “earn” it.

Lazaro sends Jacinto to the pharmacist to pick up some drugs.  It’s next to the cantina and Jacinto watches the fracas between Melea and her daughter.  It’s a bitch gettin’ old—in more ways than one as Melea knocks her daughter to the ground because she told her mama the truth that the john didn’t want her cuz she was an old whore when he wanted young flesh instead.  One of the lookers-on cautions Melea and reminds her to leave her girl alone cuz she knows she’s preggers.  This upsets Pimp Cantina Owner no end and he starts beating up on Melea for lying to him.  Violeta starts bleeding.  Jacinto observes all of this and thus carries her to the doctor’s to get her some help to save her child.

End parte 1~~
============

Parte 2~~

Dr. Vacarrio introduces himself to Dona Elisa as the eminent doctor who is taking over Sofia’s case and he prevents any travel and insists on private bedrooms “for the health of her grandchild.”  Freddy tells Mama to back off or risk appearing like a silly old woman.  She storms out of the suite with her assistant in tow and tells her plan B is now optional.  The assistant heads to the downstairs and chats up Natalia (hoping for the skinny on what’s what with Sofia).  She makes friends by giving Nat her earrings.  Upstairs, Elisa calls her doctor friend in the capital to explain her plight.  He tells her the man is tops in his field and to leave it be.  Heck!  More crap on a cracker!

Nat lets out that Angie found Sofia and shuts her pie hole – but possibly not soon enough.

Isa arrives just as Dr. V is about to fit Sofi for her prosthesis.  He chats up Isa when he’s introduced and shows great respect for a woman studying medicine –as Sofi admits she’s told him Isa has studied to become a doctor.

Felipe tries seducing Mercedes (General’s Daughter) but she’s interrupted by a knock at the door.  Felipe escapes out the window.  She sneaks out the window afterwards and meets him at the cantina ready for a ruff-ruff time in the rut-lands.

In the meantime, Ayala seeks out an old friend who tells him about the prison for the leaders of the trouble making revolutionaries.  He offers some of the files he has on the prisoners held there.  Ayala learns that a Julio Olmedo Gutierrez was murdered before ever arriving at that prison, however.  So who is this man who calls himself Julio Olmedo?  We have another mystery for El Dective Ayala to ponder.

Jacinto is dragged into becoming a nurse’s assistant for Dr. Vacario while he tries saving Violeta’s baby.

Teresa leaves Isa in the private dining room where a dozen waiters and Diego await her with a table set and fit for a queen.  Diego says he’s short on funds and on words(?) but not when it comes to the woman he loves—he’ll spare no expense.  Isa smiles wanly.
Suddenly their waiter approaches.  It’s Julio!  Uh-hem…….

It's up and there were a few terms I couldn't find and had to take from their context. If I got it wrong, well I did and let me know.

Thank you, Jardinera. The recap is great. Loved "crap on a cracker". "Ruff-ruff time in the rut lands". Too funny!

For me last night 2 highlights:

Isabel seeing Diego going to open her room.
Felipe and Mercedes on their adventure.

Looking forward to the next episode!

Jardinera- I loved the whole recap.

One bit of clarification. Ayala did not know Julio's last name was Olmedo. He knows him as Espinoza. He used the measurements he took of Julio's body and head, plus his general description, to find Julio Olmedo's prison record and to connect the Julio Espinoza he knows with Julio Olmedo. Now, since there is no photo of Julio Olmedo with those records, the measurements aren't enough for Ayala to declare 100% that Julio is that man. Plus, the fact that Julio Olmedo is supposedly dead, certainly complicates things.

So, is Julio really a murderer? And how did he fake his death?

Dr. Lazaro Vacarrio is certainly already earning his keep. Tending two women suffering from the effects of miscarriage, and already involved in a plot to cover-up a fake pregnancy. And maybe even some flirtation with Teresa on the side. My, my. According to Elisa's contact, his credentials are legit. Hmmm... Just why is he at the Gran Hotel?

Funniest moment-- Andres picking svelte Julio up and easily slinging him over his shoulder to take him to bed.

Also enjoyed all the scenes of Felipe and Mercedes. He's met his match. Not sure if either of their parents would agree they are right for each other though. They may see it as them bringing out the worst (habits) in each other.

Gracias, Jardinera.

I think Dr Vacarrio is investigating something. He may have something on the doctor who messed up Sobfia or on Teresa. Either way he knows his stuff and he seems respectful of Isabel, so he's a welcome addition to this tale in my book.

Did Julio assume his father's identity or is that record his and he was framed?

Loved Felipe's adventures with Mercedes. Whether she will be his salvation is still up for judgement.

Love how Afraido finally told his metiche mother off. Here's hoping he does regularly from now on.

Thanks, Jardinera!

Julio's alleged background is bizarre. He doesn't seem old enough to have such a record. On the other hand, he does fight like a killing machine...

Whatever Dr. Lazaro is up to, I like the way he handled Sofia, Tere, Isa, Violeta, and Andres. Not to mention Elisa. Unfortunately Alfredo's going to have to do more to prove his loyalty to Sofi before she can even consider telling him the truth.

I loved the disbelieving look on Elisa's face when the Dr got a clean bill of health, so to speak, from her pal. Kind of makes me wonder if he didn't pay some people off to give him a glowing recommendation - because I can just imagine what Elisa's "friendships" are like. ("What? You're playing a little joke on Elisa? Count me in! No, no need to pay me! I should be paying you!!")

Speaking of "friendships," I cringed at Victoria's manipulation of Natalia. Poor Nat doesn't realize that the earrings aren't really free.

I can't keep track of all the mysteries and revelations any more. I should have started a spreadsheet on the very first night. Oh well. I'm going to try to analyze less and relax more. Wish me luck. ;-)

Wow! That factory, I mean, Hotel is huge! Besides the four chimneys always smoking, it has the endless front steps that lead to the sumptuous gardens, the swimming hole, the maze, and this is only the 12th episode! I wonder what else they will show us next!

Was sad to see Belen laugh with Diego and call Andres a fool. I was hoping that even if she didn't love him, Belen respected and cared for Andres just a bit. She certainly knows how to put on a good show as the affectionate, caring girlfriend. After hearing her dis Andres, I want Angela to tear her to pieces. Let the games begin!

I agree, Vivi. Angela is a lioness.

BTW, where is that fountain? I love that Avenging Angel statue.

This was great Jardinera! I was giggling at your "crap on a cracker". There sure is getting to be more and more of those moments.

Ok, this whole 'Who is Julio" really. I've always been wondering why he is so exceptionally trained as a fighter, yet slight of build. This keeps making me think military. If he has the tattoo of a subversive, maybe he is a government spy? When he heard about his sister, he slipped away under a close-to-but-assumed name, to investigate. Ok, maybe I'm getting carried away, but this show brings that out in all of us I think. Anyway...my thinking.

I love Felippe and his Mercy Me. They are hysterical together and strangely, she seems to maybe be good for him. I mean, he actually stays sober longer when he is trying to be with her. And that window move? Lord, that was not for the faint of heart, so that boy wants his Mercy bad. Did love the General...is he not used to finding guys in her room or what?

Something odd about the doctor. So esteemed and regarded, but suddenly willing to come to an out of the way hotel and take up residence as the in-house physician? Yeah, that isn't how it works, so why is he there? Did someone send or call him secretly to look into things. He sure seemed to get sweet-talked by Teresa awfully fast.

" I want Angela to tear her to pieces." You and me both Vivi. I was beyond ticked off at her (kept hoping someone would walk in that door and catch those two). Hope when Diego goes down, he takes her with him. Poor Baby GenePool can survive and maybe Andres can help raise him, but she needs to be anvilled ( I make up words) along with Snidely Whiplash.

Daisynjay

Thanks, Jardinera! Fantastic work.

Not a shining episode for our intrepid hero. Sitting there all day adding pulque fuel to his already burning rage brought out some rotten behavior. After he was so rude to Isabel, it kind of serves him right to have to play fly on the wall at her "romantic" dinner with de Ego.

I doubt the doctor had to pre-arrange any story to feed to Elise. How could he possibly know who she knew or who she would ask about him? Plus, he seems to know his business. I think he really is a qualified doctor, but he was poking around the hotel and Diego for his own reasons, whatever they may be. As to the believability of his accepting the position (which is probably a convenient cover for whatever he really wants), he could always claim it's sort of a vacation, a light work load in a lovely hotel just for awhile. Of course Teresa probably thinks the pleasure and status of her company and business is enough to make any man want to move in.

I like the suggestion that probably everyone Elise has ever met would be delighted to gang up against her, though. I wonder how much she pays her henchie. Victoria seems smart...she could certainly turn on Elise if the situation weren't sufficiently to her benefit!

I am very curious about Victoria's backstory, though I don't expect we'll ever see it. I imagine there must be a special school to train Professional Mean Girls with classes in Fake Friendship and Advanced Bitchery. It would be the female equivalent of the school where Julio learned his Mixed Martial Arts.

Oh and I was pretty sad when Belen dissed Andres. Up to that point I had thought she was making an honest effort.

I was lost during that scene with Angela, Belen and Lupe in the kitchen. (Captions were useless.) What was happening? Was Belen siding with Angela, or with Lupe? Or just perturbing their little routine by throwing in her clueless two cents?

I'll be shocked if Belen survives to the gran fin. But we've all seen how Natalia looks at Andres, so I don't think he'll end up alone. (And if he needs volunteers, sign me up.)

"Crap on a cracker!" Golly that's funny Jardinera thanks

Well that Belen and Diego got it going on and on

Julio owes an apology but loved how it is portrayed. I spent the whole hour wanting them to see each other, briefly the dismissal at breakfast but had to wait till the end. Cannot wait to see which of them will crack.

Gracias Jardinera

I'm so surprised Televisa has done anything this good, very rare.

This is about the same period as Amor Real, maybe a bit after.

Juan Ferrera is a favorite of mine, he was fantastic in Pasion.

Think I would call Angela & Teresa frienimies.

Diego probably set up Cristina to be the go between for dirty dealings between he & Genaro. She probably had no idea she was doing anything wrong & took the fall for Diego.
It will be interesting when the Doc remembers from where he saw him.

Variopinta- I think Amor Real takes place a good 50+ years earlier, in the era of wider skirts with hoops. This is taking place at the turn of the last century, with the advent of telephones and motorized vehicles.

Yeah - we've seen more telephone-action in 12 episodes of this TN than in all of FELS. I so love the modern conveniences ;-)

Thank you jardinera.
We have to believe that Julio is the one from prison since he has the tattoo. Maybe he got his records changed after he left prison to say that he died so he could change his ID.

Dr Lazaro is a bit odd. He seems to be this esteemed Doctor but he's willing to go along with the fake pregnancy. That doesn't add up unless he's spying and needs to get in good with this family.

If the battles in Amor Real were against the French, then that's the 1860's. This show is, what 1910's? Things have changed a lot in the last 50 years (relative to these shows). I just hope Dr.Lazaro, whatever his true intentions are, wasn't lying about his respect for Isabel. She's going to need an ally if she decides to finish school, and she's sure not going to get support from her mother or fiancee.

19aughts to early 1910's if we're not in the revolution just yet, which will sadly ruin Sofia's country club/spa plans.

Kelly

Yeah, Porfirio Diaz was kicked out of Mexico by the revolutionaries in 1911, and that seems to be a few years away yet. Kelly- So true that it doesn't bode well for Sofia's spa idea, nor Alfredo's new post with the president.

The revolution in Amor Real was indigenous, Mexicans vs Mexicans.

Most interesting dialog quote from Tuesday:

"Le agradezco sus palabras, Dr. Vicario; poco gente como Ud tiene la sensibilidad de reconocer que

DETRAS DE TODA GRAN MAQUINARIA SIEMPRE HAY UN OPERADOR SOLITARIO."

Hum . . .

aside topic on Amor Real: If I recall correctly, the revolution in Amor Real was led by Juan Álvarez, who came to be president for all of the period 4 October 1855 – 11 December 1855.

I never got a good vibe from Belen. Calling Andres a fool definitely ticked me off. That gorgeous young man deserves so much better.

So Guadalupe loved cooking more than he loved his wife? There's a story there somewhere.

I do remember Juan Alvarez mentioned in Amor Real, but definitely no telephones.
So I guess FC in AR was trying to get rid of the church & military influence, Alvarez was Prez before Porfirio was elected & when he became corrupt Julio was/is trying to get rid of him.

I believe the beginning of the first ep stated it was 1908.

Thanks, Nanette. Three more years till Porfirio is ousted by the rebels then. Not much time.
