La Gata #9 - Thu 9/11 - La Despedida

Sure enough, the gossipy maid tells Lorenza that Virginia is following in Pablo's footsteps and the entire populace of La Barranca is going to invade.  Lorenza interrupts Virginia at the piano to forbid her from seeing Centavito.  (Mr. 5ft: "No problem!  I can't see.")

Pablo interrupts his father at work to tell him that…kids grow up and form their own ideas…and he's in love with Esmeralda…and it doesn't matter what her current last name is, because Pablo's going to make her a Martinez Negrete.  He wants to marry her ASAP since she won't take any money from him without being married to him.

Virginia, once again, overhears a nasty argument from her room upstairs and heads out to see what's going on.  Even Lorenza can hear him screaming at Pablo that he chose the "right" woman… one with money…and no, he wasn't "lucky" to fall in love with her, he just chose a woman who was at his level.  In the foyer, Lorenza waves the cook back to the kitchen and stands by Virginia.  Mr. Lorenza refuses to help Pablo find a job and doesn't want to hear another word out of him unless it's to tell him that he's getting married to Monica or some other twit who comes from money.

In the foyer, Lorenza demands an explanation, but Pablo leaves that to Agustin.  Meanwhile, he and Virginia head upstairs.  Agustin tells Lorenza that Pablo wants to get a job and marry Esmeralda ASAP.  Lorenza thinks they should send him to New York to study and get him away from Esme.

Esme has been provided a blue dress like all the other phone girls.  She's a little clumsy, but doing just fine.  Her supervisor doesn't think she'll last, but she's vague about why, just saying that *she* is the only one who's been there for years, not any of the pretty young things they keep brining in for her to train.  Boss man wants to talk to Esmeralda…personally…in person.  His secretary makes a face.

Lorenza tells Pablo to pack a bag for 3-4 days at the ranch.  To entertain Monica and pacify Agustin.  Pablo agrees, but he says he's not going to change his mind.  Of course, Lorenza thinks it will help them all get back to "normal."  Whatever that means.

Boss man wanted to ask Esme how she's doing and whether she's planning to head home right after work so he can drive her home.

Lorenza BS-es Monica about how Pablo's totally into her, he's just shy.  She'll have to help him out.

Boss man and his secretary have veiled words when she finds out he's driving Esmeralda home.  When they walk out, the secretary calls his wife.

Monica promises Lorenza she'll do what she can to snag Pablo.

Esme makes it to the hillside unharmed, at least.  Pablo tells her he has to go away on vacation with his family.  She's jealous because she knows Monica is going and asks him to stay.  She knows Monica is in love with him and Mariano told her that Pablo and Monica were dating.  Pablo is shocked.  Shocked, I say!

Mariano is all packed for the trip and tells Lorenza that he thinks the trip will do Pablo some good.  He beats around the bush before making her promise she wont tell Pablo that he told her…but some crazy Italian dude who's in love with La Gata came around with a gun and threatened Pablo to stay away from her.

Esme tells Pablo about Mariano's "joke."   She says they both know Monica is into him.  Pablo says he's going to win his mother over to his side on this trip.  Pablo's jealous of Esme's job; Esme's jealous of Monica.  And Doña Rita's cards don't foretell an Esme-Pablo marriage, which gives Esme a baaaaad feeling about all of this.  Pablo tells her not to pay attention to Rita…that only ignorant people like her are such superstitions liars.

Lorenza is upset that Mariano didn't tell her sooner so she could have the Meatball locked up.  Mariano tells her he knew she'd get upset.  And she should have seen the way Esmeralda defended Pablo.  She's not a bad person…she's naïve, innocent….  "Are you in love with her too?"  Yep, Eau de Protagonista: brings all the boys to the yard faster than a milkshake.  Before he can answer, Pablo walks in and starts a fight with Mariano for telling Esme that Pablo and Monica were dating.  "Dude, it was a joke!"  He finally admits he was telling her to see if she loves him as much as Pablo loves her.  Pablo doesn't need tests for that.  Lorenza calls Esme a tramp and says she hates her.  That woman's turning these two brothers who were always so united against each other!

Gata comes home and tells Centavito she's grumpy because Pablo is going on vacation.  Centavito is on the way to see his Pretty Lady (squee!) and give her a necklace.

Fela wanders over to the pizza place and shoplifts a slice to feed her baby doll.  She doesn't run away with it though, instead telling the customers she needs to feed her baby and shushing them.  Don Italiano comes over to ask her QTH she's doing and she turns into Esmeralda in front of his pervy eyes.  Either he's obsessed or this is just our sign that Fela's her mother, but either way it's gross.

Carrrrrlos is pleased to find his Pretty Lady at home and gives her the necklace with a crystal heart.  She tells him she's happy to see him and not to be surprised that she says she can see him…"The blind have a lot of different ways to see."  She wishes she could tell him to come visit her every day.

Fela tells the baby doll "they're trying to hurt us again" and tells Don Italiano that he's mean, just like "the other man."  She walks off.  Don Italiano tells Lupe that Gata is driving him crazy.  This woman's eyes reminded him of Gata's eyes.

The nosy maid runs to go tell Lorenza that Virginia is outside talking to "that boy," and Lorenza calls the cops.  I kick them both in the shins.

The secretary finally gets hold of Boss Man's wife, "Mrs. Cantu" and tells her to watch out…her hubby's got a new Pretty Young Thing at work and he even drove her home…"I wouldn't be surprised if he's home late tonight."  Well, Mrs. Cantu tells her that Boss Man is already home (which we knew, since Esme was off with Pablo), but she'll keep an eye out.  Just like she did when the secretary was the one sleeping with him.  Dun, dun, dun!  That's right, that saying about the wife being the last to know?  Not true for Mrs. C.  And by the way, that affair ended on orders of Mrs. C.

The kids declare their undying friendship, but when Virginia hears the police sirens, she tells him to go.  Her mother said she'd hurt him.

Pablo and Esme, at their respective windows, ponder their love for each other.  Principe ponders mice and tuna.  Hm…Principe needs a lady friend.

I tune out the parents as they babble the next morning about this stupid trip and the miraculous effects it's supposed to have on Pablo.

Silencioso is summoned to the director's office…Fernando de la Santa Cruz has been sent a letter informing him that the government has accepted his pardon paperwork.  Before, they had always rejected his requests, but now that they've accepted it, it's just a matter of processing the request.  It's a done deal, except for the waiting.  The director warns him that the enemy he hasn't forgotten in all this time hasn't forgotten him either.  He found out that the lawyer who accused him has been blocking all the previous requests.  Well, Silencioso has been spoiling for a fight, so as far as he's concerned, Agustin better bring it!

Mrs. Cantu spies on Esme as she gets to work.  She finds it odd that Esme took the bus.  If Boss Man ever cheats on her again, he and his tramp will pay!

As Esme gets into work, the secretary warns her that she'd better watch out for Mr. Cantu…and his wife.  Esme says he only gave her a ride home, but he was respectful…unlike other people.  The supervisor asks why Esme's not in uniform yet and what's going on with her.  She says she doesn't think anyone likes her.  At least, Alicia, the secretary, doesn't like her.  The supervisor warns her not to get into Mr. Cantu's car.  "Tell me the truth.  Is he not as nice as he seems?"  She says he's not a bad man, but he always gets what he wants and it's clear that Esme isn't very experienced.  She warns her again not to get in his car, and to be careful if she's summoned to his office again.  "You should find another job."  Esme thinks of Pablo as she tries to hold back tears.  She wonders if she's destined for nothing but tears.

Meanwhile Pablo takes a cable car ride with Monica.  Monica shops.

Esme is getting better at the phone work.  Her supervisor gives her an encouraging smile, a wink, and a thumbs up.  Alicia, the secretary, comes down to tell Esme's supervisor that from now on Mr. Cantu wants Esme to deliver his messages in the afternoon, and if there are no messages, he wants to see her anyway.  Esme's supervisor tells Alicia that Alicia is the "personal secretary" so she can take the messages herself.  "Come on, we both know that's not how this works."  Supervisor tells Alicia to tell Mr. Cantu that Esme will start delivering his messages tomorrow, because she's in a hurry to get out of the office today (and all the other phone girls are leaving).  Alicia mocks the supervisor for saying she's "advised" Esme and goes to tell Mr. Cantu what she said.  Esme is worried that her supervisor is going to get fired.  "Meh.  They'd owe me a hell of a severance!"  But Esme needs the job.  "Well, he won't get the chance to fire you today if you get out of here now!  It's already past quitting time."  The supervisor tells her to hurry up, change, and go, so she's not alone in the office.

Pablo has apparently been waiting for Monica at an outdoor café, half asleep.  She shows off her loot.

Mrs. Cantu spies on Esme again, walking out alone.  Mrs. C thinks maybe Alicia is messing with her…or maybe Alicia is having an affair with Mr. C again?  She watches her husband follow Esme to the bus stop and thinks Alicia was telling the truth.  But then Esme gets on the bus and her husband buys a pack of cigarettes from the newsstand.  She doesn't think he would have come downstairs just for cigarettes.  She thinks he must be after Esme.

Pablo dances with Monica at a club while Mariano watches.  Monica tries to get him to dance closer, and then she tries to get him to kiss her.  As Esme wonders what Pablo is doing, he seems to feel the disturbance in the Force and pushes Monica away.  He walks outside and Monica and Mariano give each other QTH looks, because in their universe there's something horribly wrong if a guy doesn't just automatically succumb to the magnetic pull of any woman's lips within 2 feet of his.  Mariano waves to her to go outside after Pablo.  Monica seriously tries to tell him that they're adults, on vacation, and "what happens on vacation…."  Pablo doesn't buy that as a reason to have meaningless vacation smoochies with her, but he does let her wheedle him into staying at the club longer.

The next morning, Esme is just getting to her desk when the cleaning lady is emptying out the trash.  She advises her to look through it, 'cause there's lots of cool stuff in the trash.  Alicia comes down to snootily summon Esme to Mr. Cantu's office.  Esme tells him it's not right for them to be alone in his car together since she's a nice girl and he's married.  He warns her not to forget that he's the president of the company.  He insists he'll give her a ride home today and they'll talk.  He'll even pick her up a few blocks away so no one sees them.  "Do you want a job or not?  Then you should know what's good for you.  After your shift, we'll talk, and you can tell me if you want to keep your job."

Esme talks to her supervisor, Ms. Arencibia, about how she wants this job.  She was hoping she could buy a chair so that Pablo could come visit her and sit down without getting poked by a spring. Ms. A thinks if Pablo loves her, he'll understand.  Esme wants the job, but not if accepting Mr. Cantu's advances is part of the deal.  "Then quit.  If you don't do what he wants, he's going to fire you today."

Monica complained to Lorenza that Pablo was boring at the club.  "I told her she could stay.  She could have danced with Mariano or anyone else."  "But she wanted to dance with you!"  "And I didn't want to dance with her or anyone else!"  Monica calls down from the balcony and Lorenza leaves so the two of them can be alone. Monica tells Pablo she had a sleepless night.

Esme tells Ms. A she can't imagine being without Pablo, 'cause she luuuuuuurves him.  Ms. A says Mr. Cantu doesn't have the right to put Esme in this position.  He said he was waiting for her answer, so her answer needs to be firm and leave no doubt.  Alicia comes down to summon Ms. A to Mr. Cantu's office.

Pablo tells Monica that just because his mother has decided the two of them are supposed to be together, but he's just not cut out to play along like that.  He likes Monica as a friend, and he thinks she deserves someone who's not faking.  "You deserve a better man than me.  One who loves you, who thinks you're worth it, one who's worth it.  I can't love you because I'm in love with Esmeralda.  I love her with all my heart, and I don't care that she's poor."

Tomorrow: Pablo declares; Lorenza schemes; Agustin tricks.

Seriously...what gives with Monica? Does she actually buy Lorenza's bull that Pablo's just shy? Is she that clueless?

And I still don't get Mariano.

And can we get Silencioso's pardon already and get this revenge thing moving, because I'm totally Team Silencioso!

Thankfully, it was a Rita-free episode.

Thank you 5ft! Wonderful! Thanks to your recap I was able to catch up on the 40 minutes I missed when company came over.

Wish we could get a breather, though, with something good happening to Miss Kitty for a change. her luck needs to turn.

J in Oregon

Great recap, Diva.

It's about time Gata is looking a little cleaner, but those boots!!

That Monica looks shy but boy is she pushy. What part of I'm in love with someone else doesn't she understand.

Ann-NYC

Thanks for the update and all the snarky bits. I missed the beginning 2/3 of this, so you recap was especially useful.

Esme must be super smart to learn a phone system when she didn't have a phone at the dump.

I've missed segments of this, but don't recall seeing the Pablo breakfast courtyard before. It's a much better part of the house than the marble foyer acreage.

Once Silencioso gets moving with his revenge, will the Martinez-Negretes skip town and force Pablo to come with them to save everyone's lives? I can see them putting that kind of pressure on him.

Trying to decide: which woman is the greater waste of oxygen--Lorenza or Rita? Other than differences in wardrobe, hair, grooming, and housing, they're both a couple of mean-spirited manipulative beyotches, trying to run the lives of their younger household members.

What a great recap!! So many good lines...even Mr. 5ft! I guess I have to say my favorite is Eau de Protagonista bringing the boys to the yard faster than a milkshake. It really does look as if Mariano is falling for Esme.

And yes, you were lucky to have a Rita-free epsisode!

BTW-I am having fun coming up with titles for the recaps. It's really building my feminine noun vocabulary. :-)

J in Oregon-I also wish our little Feisty Feline could get a break!

Ann-NYC: In Monica's defense, it's taken pablo 9 freaking episodes to actually straight up say "I Love Esme." He really is a dolt, but damn he's cute.

La Paloma-I'm going to say Rita is the biggest waste of oxygen. Thought probably through none of her own doing, Lorenza did manage to give birth to two decent kids. Rita has a jailbird son and a waste of oxygen granddaughter.

I am highly entertained by the fact that El Silencioso goes on and on about venganza yet the prison director is still willing to stick up for him and help him get a pardon. I can just see the correspondence now:

"Dear Folks in Charge,
Please let this man out. He talks about his blood lust for revenge all day and I'm tired of hearing it. Just let him out to wreak havoc so I can have some peace.

Sincerely,
A tired Prison director."

I have been really happy with the pacing so far. I hope that doesn't stop and we get a long period of doldrums.

Stellar Kat.

"Eau de Protagonista: brings all the boys to the yard faster than a milkshake."

"Principe ponders mice and tuna. Hm…Principe needs a lady friend."

Can't believe Loranza & Monica went to Taxco and didn't buy one piece of silver jewelry.

Pablo - jealous of her job? you prefer her semi naked and afraid

Mariano - "some guys have all the luck.....some guys do nothing but complain"

Lorenza - animal control uses sirens now?

Mrs. Cantu - there's a gun in the ravine

Mr. C - I got candy

Virginia - the prisoner

Fela - but, but she don't eat much

Silencioso - bout to go Bruce Willis on his ass, that's what

Esmeralda - make any difference, the chairs a recliner

Love your message to Mrs Cantu, tofie!

And just to clarify - I am NOT team Monica. I am team Pablonotbeingstupid.

Well, 5ft, this was a great rendition of loose ends and potential problems. Also, Mr. 5ft must be a hoot to live with.

So Pablo laconically suffers through a vacation with the beautiful Monica, and sets her straight about his true feelings, thus revealing his mother as a liar. Where does she go from here?

I don't get Mariano either. I think he is a vapid, unmotivated hanger on who will grab the low fruit and take advantage of anything he can.

Pablo's parents are a study in dysfunction. I think one little perverse twist in their lives will send their household into a death spiral.

As to Mr. Cantu, gee, unfettered access to a bevy of cute young women. I think his wife either needs to take the Rose Kennedy approach to this or divorce his ass.

Sara, I am with you on your wish that Pablo doesn't do anything stupid, but I think in the end we will both be disappointed.

Tofie, "Mrs. Cantu-there's a gun in the ravine" was great.

Thanks again 5ft. This recapping crew is working overtime, and it is appreciated.

David

Thanks, Kat, for the snappy recap.

The nice secretary looks familiar , but I cannot remember which novela I saw her in. the mean secretary looks like one of the backup singers for Robert oalmer's classic hit Addicted to Love.

A line is starting to form for Miss Kitty...Pablo...Meatball...not very-Ernesto...Marianonono.

As for Pablo...there is just one letter you have to change to make doll into dolt. Just saying' I like them cute...and smart.

As for Cent ..Carlos...Pierre..we are all like a bunch of proud tias wanting him to find a nice girl.

Oh, one other thought: Perhaps the pistol that the Paunchy Pizza Parlor Pervert had was a child's toy that fires nerf pellets.

David

Lawdy, Susanlynn, the executive assistant does look like one of the girls from the Robert Palmer video.

Sure the Pervwalk's queue is long

Thanks La Diva---I really needed your recap today, I am so grateful
for your work. I was wondering about a lot of that office back and fourth and who the lady in the car was.

So the supervisor gave Esme an encouraging wink, that's a good sign but it seems like the supervisor and the bosses personal assistant are at odds with each other. Will Esme be caught in the middle?

It does look like Esme is stuck with another dirty old man. That's what you get for being a goddess. At least she knows how to fight. Her tough life in the dump might work out to be an advantage for her.

looks like Mrs. C. knows about Mr. C. He won't get far. Can he fight off Cat Lady and his jealous wife at the same time? I don't think so.

La Paloma---Your last paragraph about waste of oxygen was great.

Diva---Pablo and Esme ponder their love for each other. Principe ponders mice and tuna brought a morning smile to my face.

Esme wonders if she's destined for nothing but tears was powerful
I sure hope not.

Sara---Your prison director's letter is a riot.

I'm wondering when Pablo gets back from his little vacation, will he be making up for lost time with Esme? We can only hope.

Centavito---What a nice guy.

I can't wait for tonight.
the gringo

5ft – Great recap and Mr. 5 ft cracks me up. I loved the Eau de Protagonista line too.

Pablo is so clueless right now that I wouldn’t mind Esmeralda going off on her own, with a job. I like that Mariano sees Pablo and Esme have true love - too bad he’s weak will do what mama says.

Susanlynn, the lady at the office who’s helping Esme was the biological mother of the stolen gypsy girl in Corazón Salvaje 2010.

Susanlynn-I love "not so Ernesto" and "Marianono". May I use those?

David-I love your Perv inspired alliteration!

PS:
...we are all like a bunch of proud tias wanting him to find a nice girl.

BINGO!

I reallly hope Pierre doesn't end up on the cutting room floor this time!! I think he's precious!

Sara...feel free to use my nicknames. I love your snappy recaps. The novelas are so much more fun when we can share them together and have fun sharing the snark , too.

Niecie..thanks for identifying the nice secretary. I thought that she played a good mother, but I could not remember the novela. I have been watching novelas ever since I surfed into Alborada a couple years ago, and all the storyline and characters are getting mixed up in my brain.

Thanks Susanlynn! I agree with you about sharing the fun. I always enjoy the TNs more when I watch with others. Even when the TN is not that great (TdA), I still enjoy comments and snark.

Gracias, all for the comments. I can't take credit for Eau de Protagonista, but I don't remember where that came from, originally. It stuck with me because it's such a great explanation for the way TN males react to those lovely ladies...they just can't resist!

J, I agree, I would like to see something good happen for her. If only Ms. A, the supervisor, had more power...I think she'd like to keep Esme on, but not at the risk of assault from the boss.

Ann, cleaner, hair off the face...and that blue is a good color for her! I watch her walking around in those floppy boots and think "How do they not fall off when she's climbing the hill?"

La Paloma, it's the courtyard at the ranch and I am totally jealous of it. Just a couple of days ago Agustin was freaking out and I thought talk of everyone making a run for it would come up again...but I guess since Lorenza decides what's really important, she decided getting Pablo to marry Monica was more important? I agree, Rita and Lorenza are so much alike...Lorenza is what Rita would be if she had money.

Sara, it is so difficult! I keep coming up with and discarding several masculine nouns before I can think of a feminine one. My synonym muscles are getting a good workout! I love the director's letter. Poor man.

tofie, your advice to Mrs. C is inspired. I wonder who would inherit the company? Perhaps the C's have a kind, decent son with good business sense.

David, Mr. 5ft is indeed a prince among galanes. Pablo, on the other hand.... Boy has no sense. If he'd been honest with her earlier, his mother wouldn't have had a chance to spin things. Granted, how clueless is Monica to believe that somehow her prospective mother-in-law knows more about "how young men are these days" than she does?

Susanlynn, Robert Palmer! Yes! Alicia is addicted to Mr. Cantu!

Niecie, I knew Ms. A's face looked familiar. Thank you for reminding me where I'd seen her before! I hope her character sticks around long enough to keep helping Esme.

I typed in all my comments earlier and now I don't see them
so here goes all over again.

Thank you Diva---I smiled over your line, Pablo and Esme ponder their love for each other. Principe ponders mice and tuna.

Do you think that we could borrow Principe for a weekend party out on the patio? He'd get some tuna fish for sure then, but no mice.

It looked like Esme's supervisor and the bosses assistant are at odds with each other. I'm glad that Esme got a reassuring wink at work. She can use a friend or someone on her side.

Yes it looks like her boss is a dirty old man. Maybe Esme's life in the dump all these years has made her strong. The old coot doesn't know what he's in for if he tries something with Wild Cat.

La Paloma---Your great waste of oxygen was great. There're both a waste, one a rich waste and one a poor waste.

Sara---Your prison letter was a riot.

David---I like your insight on Mariano.

Tofie---Animal control sirens? LOL
Right, Mrs. Canto should go look for that gun on the hillside. Maybe the old coot will have to fight two women, Esme and his wife. He'll go down.
Mr. C---I've got some candy. NO PLEASE NO.

I wonder if Pablo and Esme will be making up for lost time when he gets back from vacation.
the gringo

gringo, you're right! I thought I saw some comments from you, and I still have the phone notification, but they're not on the page and I don't know why. Thank you for taking the trouble to type in all your comments twice(!) so we can all see them. Principe is such a well-behaved (or drugged out of his mind) kitty, he certainly deserves a nice can of tuna. I've considered writing an entire recap from Principe's POV, but I don't think he'd make the most reliable narrator.

Mr. C's wife looks like a younger version of Raisins wife in PSMA and she shot him dead in his office. Maybe it is the red hair.

I vote for a K Prince recap

This comment has been removed by the author.

I have seen the actress who is playing Mrs. Cantu as the wronged wife in at least one other novela, but I cannot remember which one. She seems to specialize in this role.

The first time I heard the term "oxygen waster" was from my friend Herbie, the fireman.

tofie...LOL...My,mother had red hair , and she did have a bad temper !!

Diva---No you're wrong, a Principe recap would be shall we say the cat's meow. Maybe not a whole recap but a few thoughts from his prospective would be fab.
the gringo

tofie--Mrs C is exactly the same actress!! She was also in LQNPA. She does tend to get the crazy wife rolls as Susanlynn has said.

Kat-I would LOVE to hear some commentary from Principe!

thanks Sara, I wondered but too lazy to do a search and my fuzzy memory had her older. Wow, what a niche as an actress. Philandering husbands wife pushed too far

Well like you, I think she looks a little younger as well. Maybe a little work?

I think she's somehow related to the girl who played Frida in Que Pobres. Her aunt I think?
