Qué Pobres, Lunes 4/14/14 (#70): You'll Never Get Rich

I apologize; my Spanish is broken tonight and there were several scenes that sounded one way at first and then different when I replayed them... so there may be a lot of mistakes here.

Ahole offers Lupita a laughable sum for hitting her bike (which is AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT on Bingo Card #5, by the way, although in Ahole's mind it probably qualifies as sex... he did "bang" her, after all...). She tears up the money and throws it in his face (woo! more sex!).

Emiliano is calling for his mami. She tries not to react until Ahole drives away.

Vilma warns Saul that if he doesn't stop defending MA, he'll sink with him.

At home, Emiliano wants to know why Lupita was so angry with that man. He's not completely happy with her explanation that "he hit my bike," and she becomes impatient. He backs down, and she apologizes. It's just that he's never seen his mother so angry before.

Lupe tells MA about the encounter. She has mixed feelings. She feels badly that she never told Ahole about Emil, but now it's better that he never knows. On the other hand, maybe she's not doing right by Emiliano by not telling him. And maybe it was only coincidence that Ahole found her, since he was probably having Mini followed. But Lupita thinks MA should go far away. He disagrees; he wants to stick around to protect her since this is all his fault.

Vilma gloats to Ahole about Saul, but Ahole is annoyed with her for not telling him that Lupe came by a few months ago and Vilma sent her away. Vilma at first feigns ignorance, then says "Ohhhhhh that, right, I thought she was one of your amigitas coming to harass you, and you were too busy with MA." Ahole says that was okay at the time, but now that Vilma's suggested that he might have a kid somewhere, maybe this is it. Vilma doubts it, but Ahole ignores her doubts; Lupita seemed nervous.

Vilma is way ahead of him, suggesting that he should try to obtain proof; he says "I should lower your salary for saying such dumb things." But then he adds, "If I think he's mine, what should I do?" Vilma replies, "Prove it?" "Bingo!" Ahole responds. Sigh. What does she see in him?

MA tells his family that he's partners with Nepo in the juice business. Leo says MA will never get rich that way.

MA sends Leo and Mati and Frida outside to confront AS over her fight with Carmelita and setting fire to the kitchen. He also notices that a lot of his stuff is missing. She says she hocked his stuff to finance the wedding (because obviously marrying a bankrupt and/or fake countess is a guaranteed ticket on the gravy train, way better than selling juice). She denies doing anything to Carmelita. But since MA insists, even though AS did nothing wrong, "I will offer an apology." AS then utters a very brief prayer to ask forgiveness. MA says no, AS must to apologize to Carmelita and the Menchacas.

Tomas is at the fonda. Perla is very curt with him, but he says that, per her request, he's obtained permission from her father to go out with her. Hopefully we'll find out more on Tuesday!

Saul's assistant tells him the only calls today were more clients firing him, and all their new prospects have dried up. Saul calls MA for a meet right away.

Lupe tells Chuy that even with Perla and JT's help, they can't keep up the business without Carmela. Chuy tries not to have this conversation. "I didn't fire her." Lupe tells him to at least apologize to Carmela for not treating her like family. Chuy says he can't promise to persuade Carmela to come back, but he will apologize. He doesn't seem to be in a hurry, though.

At the fonda, MA is hurrying to the door. Tomas whistles at MA and scares the hell out of him. He reiterates his offer of help with MA's "situation." He graduated law school with honors, after all. MA says he's on his way to see his own lawyer right now, in fact, but thanks just the same.

MA meets with Saul at a milk store, to avoid being caught at the Chinese place again. Saul says he's losing business over MA, and Vilma and Ahole are behind it. MA says he's sorry, and he'll pay Saul just as soon as he has money again. He adds, "Uh... you told them you'd never give up my case, right?" Saul blows up at MA for being so self-absorbed when Saul's career is tanking. "Don't you understand that Vilma can make me look like your accomplice? You never ask my opinion; you only ever give orders. I'm tired of it. You're an ingrate."

The girl cop (Gomez) and the boy cop try to figure things out:

Boy Cop: Maybe Adolfo has nothing to do with Bambi, and was doing his own scheme against the RPs.
Gomez: That makes no sense. If MA were innocent, he wouldn't have run away.
Boy Cop: If I'd been unjustly accused, I would think about running away too. Let's find Adolfo first, he'll lead us to Bambi, and that'll bring out the RPs.
Gomez: I think we should get the authorities in Italy to find MA.
Boy Cop: We'd need proof of the money laundering for that.
Girl Cop: Well, maybe his lawyer Saul can help us.

Late night wee hours: MA tells Lupe about his fight with Saul. "I accused him of caring only about money, and he said I was an ingrate." Lupe reminds MA that Saul is MA's friend, above and beyond being his lawyer. MA admits that he's been a selfish RP. Lupe says, "at least you realize it." MA replies, "I have much to learn from you and the Menchaaaaacas."

Morning: Beto, Vilma, and Ahole wait in the car outside the school. Ahole says he's going to use his power of seduction. (Good, then it'll be quick.) He approaches the principal, flatters her, tells her he's thinking of sending his own kid to school here. She takes him on a tour, which includes the "In 20 Years" presentation. Emiliano is showing off MA's polo mallet and saying that in 20 years, he'd like to be on a polo team.

Oh yeah, Ahole tells the principal, he loves the place. Is it okay if he watches the kids play. Instead of calling the Pervert Patrol, the principal says sure, feel free to hang around!

Emil is telling the other kids at recess that his father is a world-famous polo player. Ahole steps in: he LOVES this story! He plays polo too! What's Emil's daddy's name? The kids pipe up that Emiliano has never told them his father's name. Emil hesitates, and Ahole lets him off the hook. He'll have an employee bring them all some ice creams. (Still no Pervert Patrol. The principal is charmed.)

A bell signals the end of recess. Ahole offers to collect all their cups and spoons so they won't be late to class. He puts all the other kids' stuff in one bag, and Emiliano's in another. He drops the other kids' stuff on the ground, not even bothering to aim for the trash can.

Saul's receptionist says there is a new client. Who is it? MA, begging Saul's forgiveness and asking Saul to drop his case. "You must be getting used to being poor," Saul jokes. MA says no he's not, but love is more important than money. Saul says he'll still be MA's lawyer, but they'll have to keep it on the QT from now on.

Gomez and Boy Cop want to stake out Saul's office so they can follow Saul and see where he goes and who he sees. MA emerges from the building just as they arrive, but they're too busy trying to find a parking space and they don't notice him. Boy Cop has also checked around back to make sure there's no other exit. Yes, they're being extremely diligent, leaving nothing to chance, watching Saul's door as MA walks past them, looking very suspicious with a hoodie pulled around his face.

Vilma swabs Ahole's mouth for the DNA test. He gloats that he's such a genius. Saul calls. Ahole doesn't want to talk to him. He wants to relax for a while. Vilma reminds Ahole that he has a board meeting this afternoon. "Old zombies, why don't they die?" Ahole whines. (He doesn't know much about zombies.)

MA goes to the market, and Nepo is in a forgiving mood. He tells MA it's okay. "Accept some help once in a while. Later, you can return the favor!"

Saul tells Vilma he's dropping MA's case. Not because Saul asked MA, but because MA asked Saul. But MA is definitely innocent. "Sooner or later, justice will be served!"

Suddenly, Ahole is at the cloob for lunch. Everyone is staring at him. Word's out about his wife-beating, motivated by his impotence. He denies it, but no one believes him.

And just as suddenly, Ahole is at the board meeting: The zombies have also heard about those rumors, and they have questions. And to add to the fun, Minerva and Isela interrupt the meeting with an announcement!

Done!

Thanks so much Julie!! I tried and tried to stay awake but once my daughter and her son went to bed, i was left alone with no other noise so i fell asleep... You filled me in very nicely!! for one, I am glad I missed the A-hole at school scenes. I would have been throwing things at the TV, with the school administrators nowhere in sight and welcoming him to hang around just like that and even treat the kids to ice cream!! unreal!!
As far as MA appologizing to Saul, too little too late... you can never take it back completely!

Julie:

This whole recap is fab. Your best line was the one about Ahole not knowing zombies, lol.

I too was wondering que, que, what???? was up with that principal letting Ahole chat up the kids, and who walks around carrying a baggie for ice cream cups? She should have called the pervy patrol!

I too didn't like the way that MA has been treating Saul, he is his friend besides being his lawyer. I am glad that MA apologized to Saul, it's a start. I think MA ought to take Tomas up on his offer. I would love to see Vilma try and threaten him!

I really laughed when Ahole was at the cloob and AS' old friends dissed him. I can't wait for that board meeting to see what Mini and Isela will tell those guys. Another stumbling block in Ahole's path.

Thanks again Julie for this fab recap!

Julie, thank you for another great recap. You sure hit it on the head with "no pervert patrol". Hard to believe that in this day and age grown a stranger would be allowed any unsupervised contact with any child at any school let alone allowed to chit chat with a group. I had to remind myself this was just a fiction, a fantasy and that Alejo did have his powers of seduction but it took me a minute.

My favorite scene was with MA and AS where he is appealing to her to apologize and her response is to logically (in her own devious mind) to pray and ask for and receive forgiveness from God. We always knew Carmelita and the Menchacas didn't count.

I also enjoyed:

AS telling MA to have some respect for her and to learn from his brother Da Vinci (who was in an outfit matching AS).

Vilma in the car daydreaming about Alejo.

MA showing some self-awareness by telling Lupita that he was his same old selfish and prideful self with Alejo.

Alejo's "Bingo" moment.

Isela's friends and their interchange with Alejo at the Club.

An aside: In the end I think that AS could find a perfect partner in don Salomon. they seem to share the same materialism and ethics. Now if he could only elevate his game and bankbook a bit . . .

Can't wait for the rest of the board meeting!

Jarifa

should have read "a grown stranger"

Jarifa

Jarifa, I agree that AS and Salomon are soulmates at heart, but I can't imagine AS ever accepting him.

I'd really like AS to evolve a little, but if she doesn't, I think she could end up with him out of desperation - much like when Lupita could no longer even dream about sand castles. And AS would regret that for the rest of her life, because he's not the same kind of rich/fancy as her "friends" at el cloob.

But who knows. If he can keep her supplied with enough gin, maybe she could learn to love him.

There was some really awkward editing at the end of the episode - I hope tonight we'll see whatever else happened just before and after Ahole went to the club, and just before the board meeting.

Thanks Julie!

I haven't commented in a while because I've been behind, but I'm all caught up and just wanted to tell the recappers that you all have been doing a wonderful job!

My favorite scenes were the ones at the school. I agree about calling Pervert Patrol. Ahole gives off so many creepy vibes anyway, but buying ice cream for schoolkids took it to a whole new level. And I loved it when he walked up to the trashcan and then tossed his trash on the ground right next to it. What a turd.

It seemed like when the principal walked away from him, he watched her backside and then raised his eyebrows and gave a little nod as if to say "Hmm, not bad." I thought he did this a few days ago when Vilma was leaving his office, too. If there's a lady's bottom anywhere close by, Ahole's eyeballs will probably find it.

Saul getting an attitude with Vilma at the end was funny. I liked him wagging his head back and forth, and her mocking him. He's really starting to get fed up. At least MA is finally supporting him. Thanks, Lupita.

Very funny recap Julie, thank you! I, too, loved the line about the zombies.

Agree with all the comments about the principal letting Alejo hang out with the kids.
It’s scary how the principal just let him hang out at the school unattended.

I actually enjoyed AS’s apology (to God). And when she told MA that he should be more like DaVinci that doesn’t talk back to her (la regaña) and he replied that it’s because he can’t talk back.

MA looked very selfish with Saul though at least he was able to apologize.

Evelin

Thanks so much for your recap Julie.

Add me to the list of those creeped out by Alejo at the school. But Emiliano's DNA had to be obtained and this is how the writers wrote it.

Though he still has a long way to go, MA apologizing for being an idiot is a another first step. He also needs to let Lupita know about the will and the house stuff.

I guess what bothered me about the DNA scene at the school was that it made me wonder if this sort of thing is considered acceptable. I mean, when MA went to the school he had to wait outside the gate even though he said he was Emiliano's father. But Ahole was allowed to waltz right in and party with the kids!

I can't believe MA hasn't told Lupita about the clause and the house stuff yet. Well, okay, yes I can believe it because that's how TNs work, but it's giving me fits. It's like The Letter in LFMB, knowing that it's just waiting for Lety to find it and read it and all hell will break loose.

Thanks, Julie. I liked the line about Ahole not understanding zombies, too.

What the frack was wrong with that headmistress? Skeevy looking dude who wants to hang around chatting up the kids and buying them ice cream doesn't set off any alarms for her? And what kind of weirdo has a pocketful of ziplock bags handy for collecting their trash? She shouldn't be in charge of children!

Glad Tomas made an appearance! I like him. I think MA should take him up on his offer of lawyering. He seems smart enough and Vilma and Ahole don't know him.

I thought MA moved out of the Menchaca house because he was afraid of being found there. Was that just a one-day thing? He doesn't hesitate to go there now.

I don't understand how Ahole found Lupe at the school. Did Beto follow her there, or did Ahole just happen to run into her?

Julia, apparently moving out was just a one-day thing. Not even 24 hours, I don't think. But the initial emergency that provoked his moving out was fear that Mini would turn him in. Now that she's at war with Ahole, MA isn't worried about that.

Ahole found Lupe at the school by tracing the registration on her bike in Beto's foto. The registration led back to the bike's previous owner, who had posted the bike for sale around the school.

Oh, thanks. I missed the previous owner telling him that.

It's kind of weird that Lupe didn't re-register the bike, though. She's usually so law-abiding and keeps up on permits and stuff! Are the rules different in Mexico? Was the previous owner really not responsible for giving notice that he had sold the bike? I know that here if you sell a motorcycle or car, you want to submit the form saying so immediately so that you aren't liable for anything about it anymore!

So true about Ahole at the school!

With Vilma and Alejo, he was actually ahead of her. She's jealous, and tries to poo-poo the idea of Emiliano being her son, and he tells her that she needs to start thinking basically. It's one of the few times that Alejo was ahead of her.

I'm so glad MA apologized and that he can recognize his own bad behavior. He was being a terrible friend.

I think Ahole will strike a deal with Minerva so he can keep her from ruining his reputation tonight.

I don't know much about these things in Mexico, but it certainly does not sound like Lupita at all not to have the bike registered in her name (never mind the previous owner's own responsibility). It is very odd!

Thanks for clarifying, Anon 1:54, about Vilma and Alejo. I know she's trying to keep Lupita away from Ahole, but I was lost during that conversation!

Julie - I think Alejo told the principal that he was interested in sending his son to this school and that's why the principal let him in so he could tour the school.

He did tell the principal that, but she didn't seem very curious about his son. The tour made sense from his claim of wanting to send his son there, but the interaction with the other kids was a bit odd. And when he was talking to Emiliano, one of the other kids said to the others, "that must be Emiliano's dad. They look so much alike." So even the other kids were picking up on some sort of connection/special interest in Emiliano, but the principal seemed to be oblivious.

Thanks Julie, you ambushed me with:

"(which is AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT on Bingo Card #5, by the way, although in Ahole's mind it probably qualifies as sex... he did "bang" her, after all...)"

Hilarious. And probably about as pleasurable as their original encounter.

Like everyone else here I was appalled by how easily Alejo accessed the children at the school, especially after the way MA was handled when he visited. Yikes!

I so enjoyed Alejo's visit to the club.

Carlos

Yes, I'm pretty sure I included in the recap that Ahole told the principal he was thinking of sending his son to school there. That's not in question. But letting him have access to the kids and even feed them is really bizarre. If they'll let anyone do that just because they say they're thinking of sending their kid to school there, especially without so much as an appointment, that's a serious security issue that many parents would object to.

ITA with Carlos, Julie...
this...
"(which is AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT on Bingo Card #5, by the way, although in Ahole's mind it probably qualifies as sex... he did "bang" her, after all...)"

was the hysterical line of the recap!

and coming back to the reason the principal let A-hole wander around the kids and even treat them to ice cream.

when I was a kid, if parents were interested in a particular school for the kids, the principal/admins would probably give them a tour, but would not step even 10 feet away from the guests, let alone let them interact with the kids without supervision. Nowadays, the visitors would be lucky if they get to see the kids interact from 50 feet away... lol! outrageous!!

i really hope they repeat A-hole at the club tonight. i will certainly stay awake for that one and recap it...

Julie - I, too, loved your references to Alejo's customary sex-related behavior: 1) he "banged" Lupita's moto with his car, and 2) the next day, you say "Ahole says he's going to use his power of seduction. (Good, then it'll be quick.)"
Very funny! Keep up the great job! Thanks, Ann C.

Julie, thanks for that fabulous and funny recap. Others have already quoated my favorite lines especially Alejo "banging" Lupita.

Da Vinci's outfit made him almost blend into AS, what with the identical fabric. Assuming Carmela made that, she doesn't get enough credit for her dressmaking skills.

Agree that the headmistress was careless at best in allowing Alejo such close contact with the kids.

I really like the way this TN is on the low-key side, yet constantly amusing and entertaining.
